Unauthorized Immigrant Arrests Have Been In Decline Until This Year

By Marlon Saucedo

The number of arrests aimed at unauthorized immigrants has gone through a steady decline since the late 2000s.

The total number of unauthorized immigrants coming from Mexico to the U.S. has decreased from 6.4 million in 2009 to 5.6 million but the number of immigrants from Central America and Asia has increased from 5 million to 5.7 in the same time frame.

Even though the number of people apprehended at the border has been at its lowest in decades, the number of immigrants arrested for non-criminal offenses has increased exponentially since the beginning of the Trump Presidency.

President Trump has continued to push towards building a $21-70 billion wall between the United States and Mexico, one of the main promises of his campaign. Opponents of the construction of the wall have argued that the wall wouldn’t be useful towards controlling the incoming flow unauthorized immigrants since most come by car or airplane and overstay their visa.
